Ruins of old mills in Carthage, NY
Taken on 12/04/08
Ruins from the old Carthage water pumphouse and headrace, the National Paper Tissue plant, Guyots Island storehouse and Carthage Iron Works. They may also have been called "Guyot Island Mills".  In Carthage, looking over at Guyot Island

In 1884 a fire swept across the mills and factories of Carthage, destroying many of them and leaping from the west side of the Black River to the businesses on the islands, then across to the east side.  More info about the Great Carthage Fire of 1884 can be found on this page at the JeffCoWiki.
Thanks to Scannerman for the suggestion and directions to this location for these series of pics.

Comments from visitors:
Jack S. says "This was the office of the Island Paper Mill. The mill was closed when the minimum wage law came into effect. The owner said no one would tell him how much to pay his help. The men were encouraged to find other jobs, but if they showed up to work they drew a paycheck." and "Several years ago there was an auction at this place, one of the items was a Duisenberg car."
